How to fix curdled frosting?

I just made a vanilla buttercream icing, With butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, milk and a pinch of salt. The butter was cold, so I softned it Added the sugar(one cup at a time) followed by the rest of ingredients and it resulted in the frosting curdling. I thought it got too warm so I have it in the fridge. Or is there another solution?
